Hendra Virus Test Project Update
In June 2020, Equestrian NSW contributed $40,000, through Agrifutures, to help the University of Queensland (UQ) develop a rapid Hendra virus test. Here is an update provided by Agrifutures.
Following extensive testing, UQ have determined that their point of care HeV test is as sensitive as the current gold standard test offered in a diagnostic laboratory. Quality assurance methods have been implemented to ensure the accuracy of the test and safety of all operators. A computer-controlled testing unit to maximise safety, accuracy and usability has been developed and is currently being beta tested, with release expected in early 2021. A training module, both video and in person, is also being developed to assist end users. Cost and time to do the test are still work in progress. We are pleased to say we are currently well on track for a planned early to mid-2021 availability of this HeV testing system, available to be used clinically to assist with horse welfare and ensure human safety.
